Man, I share your pain. My dream garage is on constant back burner - it's just not as life-affecting as a nice kitchen, and truly, if I'm honest, I want a 10-car garage, not some also-ran two car. ;) I have look at canopies and other temporary structures, and what I found *here* is that the cost of the concrete is the big expense (about $2k here!), and once you've had that poured, building a more permanent, more attractive wood-based structure isn't much more than the $1200 metal ones. Most of the pieces (trusses, etc.) are available prefab, so you don't even have to engineer anything. Some stout legs, a prefab truss, and some ply and you've got an ok-looking structure for your car. Years ago I found a company that sells "garage kits" just for this purpose. Sadly, they were based in Australia. I wouldn't be surprised these days to find someone domestically doing the same thing... temporary shelters definitely have a lot of traction, I'm sure there's a good number of people looking for something, well, nicer.
Hey, check out Carolina Carports - they don't serve my area, but I'm betting they have competition that does. $1500 is a ready to build kit. Not bad.
