Things are different in Michigan and Florida than nearly everywhere else.
Everyone pays their own cost of repairs. Law suits are banned except in limited situations, such as accidents involving death and other rare cases. Michigan does have a Mini-Tort provision whereby the driver judged to be more than 50% at fault pays the other driver's out of pocket costs - such as deductible. Maximum value of a Mini-Tort is $1K and this value is multiplied by the percent of fault to achieve maximum per case pay-out value.
So maybe his $500 deductible will be paid by the driver who hit him. These Mini-Tort amounts are traded/determined between the Insurance Companies and the drivers never have to file any court papers.
I found a sweet 2008 Blue 9-3SS locally with under 70K miles for ~$8K. The wife and I might need to help him swing a replacement vehicle. Good thing he is becoming a Dr., at least he is a good credit risk with his scholarship which is paying all of his education costs and his future expected earnings.
