+1 on reading the date code. Then you know when they are made. I would inspect the condition of tires (microcracking, wear), but I am not overly concerned about the age. If you don't drive the car a lot and if it is garaged and things are well maintained, they can last quite a while. Some brands last better than others. I've driven Nokians at 10+ years with no evidence of cracking or damage, and I've ditched Michelins after about 3 years that were starting to slightly exhibit this (removed more so due to tire wear, but still).
In terms of new tires for a Viggen, I would look into the Bridgestone Potenza RE970. I have those on my 95 and they are a great tire in terms of performance wet and dry:
