Anders,
I suffered with episodes of a-fib over the years, where the heart races and skips beats, and it eventually developed to include a-flutter, where the atria just quiver are even less able to fill the ventricles (the larger chambers) with blood properly. It is an electrical short circuit of the heart muscle. The episodes were at first infrequent and then very frequent, often lasting hours before regular rhythm was restored, as I got older (58). I was tired and never felt really well, even though everything else was fine. This condition can contribute to a stroke or heart attack as the slow moving blood can clot.
In 2013, I just happened to be at a cardiologist for an EKG and routine stress test as part on an annual physical, and I wasn't feeling well. She sent me to the hospital immediately when she saw that both conditions were happening on the EKG at the same time and I had the procedure on an emergency basis.
Cardiologists are probably the best trained of all the doctors. I am fortunate to live near a major cardiac center that had just put in the latest equipment for the ablation procedure and had one of the "star" doctors trained on the latest equipment. I was put under, and after an hour was in a room for overnight observation and was released the next day with no restrictions. The overnight was more for the anesthesia than the ablation.
The a-fib and a-flutter condition was gone after the procedure. I felt 10 years younger after that as the heart was more efficient and I could do more physical activity. If you have these conditions, get the ablation done. Everyone remarked that I looked and sounded better after the procedure. I could sleep better. Find the hospital with the best reputation for the procedure in your area, if you are in the LA area that should not be difficult, and get it done.
My doctor said about one third of the adult population has a-fib to various degrees, so it is not uncommon. Alcohol and salty foods seem to trigger it for most, so get on a healthy diet. Don't be suspicious of the doctors, this is important. Nothing is without risk, but this condition does not get better on its own.
I you want to discuss this over the phone in more detail, respond here and I'll call your shop to set up a time to talk.
