Outcome would likely have been different, i.e. correct.
Now GM is thanking the American public for the bail-out by importing vehicles from China for sale in the US as near-luxury SUV's, while simultaneously shuttering North-American plants. Lake Orion (MI) is on the bubble again, Pontiac Truck Assembly (MI) is gone, Janesville (WI) never re-opened, Moraine Assembly (OH) is gone, Spring Hill (TN) is half open only because the NY State Pension Fund invested in it back in the '80s with a written guarantee the plant would never close until the loans are paid back, the Oshawa Autoplex (CAN) is only one third of its former self. Then there are all the Metal Fabrication and other component plants that closed. Most of these plants did not close during the bankruptcy but rather afterward.
And a whole slew more that I somehow forgot about. Lasing (MI) Craft Center, Oklahoma City Assembly, Shreveport (LA) Assembly, Doraville (GA) Assembly, Baltimore Assembly, Wilmington (DE) Assembly, and Linden (NJ) Assembly. Meanwhile, all the plants in Mexico (Ramos Arizpe, Silao, San Louis Potosi, and Toluca) are expanded.
Is it any wonder that I had seen too much in the years leading to, during, and post bankruptcy to continue acting blind? My decision was to resign after 30+ years - just to get out before I turned as callous as GM's top execs - and started fresh somewhere else for the final years before retirement.
No pension from GM, no Healthcare from GM, not even Life Insurance after all those years. These benefit eliminations all happened a couple years AFTER the bankruptcy. Man, they are a cold uncaring bunch. GM's marketing slogan was "Mark of Excellence" for decades. A more appropriate corporate slogan today would be "Take the money and run, the American public is dumb."
