Hitch rack for me on a sedan was so-so. It is convenient, but more drag with the sedan, maybe even than bikes on the roof. Wagon would be different (aerodynamic flow).
The other problem on the 9-5 is all that weight hanging way past the rear axle was hard on the rear suspension, and sometimes the bottom of the rack would scrap pavement (slope transitions/curbs in hilly locations). It is a significant lever arm and the 9-5 rides lower than an SUV.
I have a Yakima Hilite 3 (higher end, lighter weight hitch rack).
Thule and/or Yakima (both?) make one that will fold all the bikes away from the hatch so you can open it even with all the bikes loaded, but the downsides: it's heavy, and it costs $$!
I think I'm going to go back to roof top bikes, though now with 4, we may at times need to put 2 on the back and 2 up top or whatnot.
