You really have to figure out what you want before you start talking logistics. What sort of angles? Color or B&W? Wired or wireless? Infrared (night vision) or no and what range? What are you displaying it on?
The cheap ($15) wireless color license plate cameras work pretty well. You shouldn't need to drill into the trunk lid - you can usually go through the license plate light lens, although you'll have a tiny bit of wire exposed. If you don't want that, yeah, you probably gotta go through the trunk behind the plate.
On a car, personally, I can't see any reason to go wireless. I'd take the time and run the wire. It's only 15' or so, usually doable without disturbing too much. On the motorhome, my $15 wireless was a good solution as I wasn't keen on snaking 45' of wire. :) I would take that out of the equation and focus on the other variables.
