In Canada, one great place to go with lots of stock, a nation-wide presence, and great support for your demographic of bike rider (keen commuter rider, not a gearhead or boy racer, but practical-minded) is MEC (Mountain Equipment Coop). Actually, they are quite good for kids bikes also. MEC actually has a range of bikes with their name on them and they are spec'd pretty well at various sensible price points for workhorse style bikes... especially the hybrids...

In USA, you have REI. See link! They are a similar company to MEC, and carry similar gear (eg Ghost bikes). I don't see REI branded bikes, but something like the Ghost Panamao series might work for you. Best to try a few options out.
