yeah, REI sounds very similar to MEC in Canada (probably the REI concept was what MEC was based on as it started as mail order also). MEC used to sell only bike accessories, and they were mostly kind of non-performance oriented "touring" type products, but they have expanded and into complete bikes also, some of which are fairly high performance, though still slanted towards touring, commuter, etc. The nice thing about MEC is if they suite one's style of riding, they really feel like a LBS, with an in store repair shop, friendly customer support, workshops, etc... maybe REI would be similar. Of course it is good to support your LBS if you have a good one. I find LBS's can be hit or miss though. If you are lucky and have a shop with the right gear for you and friendly people, that is gold.
