I'm with you on this stuff... makes a big difference... especially if one also regularly listens to unamplified live music (or plays), average audio equipment leaves a lot missing...
That said, I am slowly converting to FLAC for playback. CD's are capable of a lot more than most recordings on CD offer... but it is easier to get things right with greater bandwidth and resolution available through FLAC. And it is convenient once set up properly. Really CD's were about convenience compared to LP's so they will eventually become obsolete.
I also think the modern way is better for artists (or can be)... though it may be tougher on the non-superstar big label artists in terms of record store sales, it opens doors for many aspiring creative types to self-promote. Whether one can make a career out of it still hangs on the artist's quality and ability to break out above the noise (which usually requires others), but to get started, there is lots more opportunity than there was 20 years ago.
