You get pre check leaving the US and expedited customs coming back in. Some other countries honor also. Cost $100. Apply online, go in for an interview and finger prints. Takes maybe 1 to 3 months start to finish. I flew from Newark Liberty last summer and the tsa line without precheck was unbelievable. I didn't have the global entry when we got back, but out of all the people waiting on line for customs that day I saw 1 person heading to the expedited customs area.
