Here's the deal - a hacker has a breached web site's email/password file and your email address and password were in the file and now you've gotten an extortion email. So, if your email is email@example.com and your password is 24sixeight10, you get an email with subject: john - 24sixeight10. If the pair is firstname.lastname@example.org/123passme, the subject is the: johnsmith - 123passme. The scammer says he knows your password and has installed a keylogger on your system and has used your webcam to take an incriminating video that he will share with all your contacts/Facebook contacts unless you pay some sum. The scammer has not installed any malware (run Avast on your system to see) and does not have any video or your contacts. You can just ignore the email. Also, the poor writing is another giveaway. A real pro hacker would take the time to write a decent email, imho. Below is the example email (this hacker is using the outlook.com public email service)
I won't beat around the bush. I know that YOURPASSWORDHERE is your password. Most importantly, I'm aware about your secret and I have proof of it. You don't know me personally and nobody hired me to look into you.
It's just your hard luck that I came across your bad deeds. In fact, I placed a malware on the adult videos (pornography) and you visited this web site to experience fun (you know what I mean). When you were busy watching videos, your browser started out functioning as a Rdp (Remote desktop) with a keylogger which provided me accessibility to your screen and webcam. After that, my software gathered your entire contacts from fb, as well as mailbox.
I then put in more hours than I probably should have exploring into your life and generated a double display video. 1st part shows the video you had been watching and next part shows the capture from your web camera (its you doing inappropriate things).
Frankly, I am willing to forget everything about you and let you move on with your daily life. And my goal is to provide you two options that can accomplish this. These two options are either to ignore this letter, or simply pay me $SUM. Let’s understand above 2 options in details.
Option 1 is to ignore this email message. Let us see what will happen if you opt this option. I will send your video to your entire contacts including family members, colleagues, and so on. It won't save you from the humiliation your family will feel when family and friends uncover your sordid videos from me.
Option 2 is to pay me $SUM We will name it my “privacy charges”. Now let me tell you what happens if you choose this path. Your secret remains your secret. I'll destroy the recording immediately. You go on with your routine life like nothing like this ever happened.
At this point you must be thinking, “I should call the cops”. Let me tell you, I've taken steps to ensure that this email message cannot be tracked to me and it will not stop the evidence from destroying your lifetime. I am not trying to dig a hole in your pocket. I just want to get paid for time I put into investigating you. Let's assume you have decided to generate this all go away and pay me my confidentiality fee. You'll make the payment by Bitcoins (if you don't know how, search "how to buy bitcoins" in google)
Required Amount: $SUM
Bitcoin Address to Send to: BITCOINADDRESSHERE
(It is case sensitive, so copy and paste it carefully)
Tell no-one what you would be sending the Bitcoins for or they will often not sell it to you. The task to get bitcoins may take a couple of days so do not delay.
I've a special pixel within this e-mail, and now I know that you have read this e mail. You have 1 day to make the payment. If I do not receive the Bitcoins, I will send out your video recording to your entire contacts including family members, colleagues, and so forth. You better come up with an excuse for friends and family before they find out. Having said that, if I receive the payment, I will destroy the video immediately. It's a non-negotiable offer, so please don't ruin my time and yours. Your time is running out.
