OT: Evolution of the car radio Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 4 Apr 2019 17:48:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Car radios used to be strictly a radio. Then they became a limited feature stereo with the addition of a tape deck. Then they became a nearly full function stereo with the addition of tape and CD and input jack. Then they added video displays with onboard GPS, and finally inputs for hands-free cell phone use
Now they are more of a video display with a docking station, both wireless and hard-wired. I am not certain some car radios even have a self-contained tuner anymore, and I doubt any have a tape or CD player.
Personally, I would rather have the GPS totally separate from the phone. Trying to use one device for both has resulted in too many dropped traffic directions because a worthless call came in just as a critical turn was being described. Refusing to answer the call does not help.
My old TomTom is incapable of further map updates, and I received two days notice that an upcoming automatic GPS renumbering update would have rendered it useless on Saturday if I did not immediately load a patch which allows continued use - at diminished capability - for a while longer.
Guess I will be buying a new TomTom as I have had poor experience trying to use multi-function smart phones for detailed GPS instructions. I hope the new GPS will accept my custom splash screen.
