I bought my Garmin in 2009, and it's also a USB-1 connection. True, it does take a while (close to one hour) to update the maps, but you only need to do it once a year. My Garmin has enough memory to store maps for all of the continental U.S, Canada, and Mexico. Mine does not have an external card slot.
