In contrast to you learning to drive stick on a '73 Beetle, I learned on a good friend's 1970 Mustang Mach 1 with 351 CI engine and a Hurst 4-speed floor shifter. Great teaching car as the components were fairly heavy duty, and with enough low end torque the engine was impossible to stall! Sadly, that car disappeared during the gas crisis that followed shortly thereafter.
I've had manual transmission cars for the last 45 years.
