I too bought some BBS wheels several years ago that had been used for winter tires and were very black. Luckily they had no road rash and cleaned up beautifully. I used an all-purpose cleaner called Purple Power that I get at Walmart. I would not use full strength but experiment with some dilutions to avoid causing any paint damage, although I see no paint damage at all after cleaning my wheels. I bought some cotton buffing attachments for an electric drill on the online auction that come in different shapes and make corners and grooves easier to clean. But mostly it takes serious elbow grease. I have also had good luck with Griot’s Garage heavy duty wheel cleaner to remove the yellow cast that remains on the paint that I believe is iron staining from the rotors. It’s a little stinky, but works. They also have a product specifically for iron stains, but I haven’t tried that yet. I even got the back of the wheels as clean as new using these products. The paint now sparkles just like new even though the wheels are over 15 years old.
