Jim!! Great to see you here. No, it wasn't your fault at all. I have been driving it pretty hard ever since I took it from you and it has been great. What happened is that about month prior, I was at a light by myself with the music playing very loudly and I took off from the line hard and I mis-released the clutch with too many RPM's and it was slipping and I didn't notice so I smoked it pretty badly on that one and I could smell it all the way home... was hoping I didn't hurt it too badly, but I did.
The bigger problem was that after I got it fixed (found an Indie Subaru repair shop within 3 miles of my house), I felt that 1st gear was hesitating a little and I called in about it, but the owner said it was fine. Sure enough, less than 5,000 miles later, that clutch failed. They replaced it for free with no labor costs (just a couple weeks ago) and at that time I had the option to upgrade to a performance clutch and flywheel, which I did. However, it still feels notchy to me in 1st and reverse, so I am going to call on Monday and have the owner test drive it. As long as he gives it the thumbs up, I know my ass is covered.
It now has about 80,000 miles and is driving smooth and amazingly. All power, all the time.
