Some tires are directional and need to be oriented for correct rotation to perform properly.
Interestingly, Saab 9000 wheels are marked for rotation. (At least the 15 inchers on mine are.) Presumably this is to funnel as much cooling air as possible to the brakes. Mine aren't a correct matched set so some are "backwards" but I never noticed any problems.
