I have done it twice, both times the state I lived in at the time had a portion on the back of the title specific to releasing the vehicle as totaled or destroyed. I used this section to sell the junker to the scrap yard and also got a receipt (one had to ask for) with the VIN on it and description of the vehicle.
You might check with your state as to the steps to junk or sell to a salvage yard, they may have a specific way or form to do so.
Sad to hear though....I traded my bought-new 99 9-3 SE HOT for my current vehicle.
