As a middle age runner, I have plenty of knee degradation too. I know you are west coast, but you might want to look into Dr. Howard Luks. He's in New York. At least read his blog. He discusses hyaluronic acid injections and many other options. I am in PA, and I actually went to see him to review my knee MRI. He is awesome. The first orthopedic surgeon I went to was short and cold with me. Dr. Luks spent a lot of time examining my knee and going over my MRI with me. In conclusion, he thought my damage was typical for my age as a runner. He gave me some specific training advice and I left feeling much better. He has a lot of good reading on his website.
I know the Stone clinic is out your way, and they do some cutting edge stuff. Maybe look into them? I don't have any first hand knowledge about them. My knees and the ability to continue to run are paramount to me. I would try or pay anything to continue doing what I love.
Lastly, I know there are special unloader braces that unload the knee, or shift the load from one the medial to lateral side (or vice versa). Maybe look into them too?
Good luck!
