I understand your situation. If it were me, I would wait until I was certain I was not returning home this Summer before before enlisting Mom’s help. I don’t see the difference in starting it today vs. 3 months from now. If and when it becomes certain that you will not get home, then I would go with plan Mom.
I would think driving the vehicle is just as important as letting the engine idle if you are concerned about mitigating the effects of sitting for 6 months. Does Mom plan to drive the car a few times throughout the Summer? I think that the process Craig described is as good a shortcut as you will get for a less mechanically able person compared to what you usually do, but there is some risk, it is not as good as your normal process with pulling plugs and squirting oil into the cylinders. There’s a real risk your battery may conk out before your Mom gets the engine running. I would have your mother pick up a trickle charger for the battery and leave that connected for a week prior to first cranking of the engine. And if you decide to wait a couple months I would still do the battery charger now, it can mitigate the risk of a dead battery later on. On the other concern of firing before you want it to, I doubt the engine will fire lacking fuel pressure from the pump.
