I recently needed a set of tires for my rusty beater '86 900S. Last few sets of tires were used, purchased from a used tire store. They usually worked out OK but since it means starting out with tires a few years old they typically would dry-rot before significant tread wear set in.
So this time I bought a set of new "Waterfall Eco Dynamic" tires online from Wal-Mart. At the time (a couple of weeks ago) they were about $35 each for the size needed, pretty close to the cost of used tires. I did have to take them elsewhere for mounting and balancing, which cost extra, but still a pretty good deal overall. The tires are made in Turkey and reviews on them are good. They seem to work well on the old 900; quiet, ride well, and the car handles well with them. Of course these tires probably won't last as long as the leading brands but the car doesn't get a lot of use. Wal-Mart also has their own line of tires branded "Douglas" which are made in the U.S. by Goodyear.
If you're still keen on used tires you might get lucky on Craigslist. Maybe even a junkyard, which is where tire stores typically get their wares.
