Good point on the 'off brand' tires. I mentioned Kumho which along with brands like Sumitomo are pretty well respected now and produce a good tire, but the weirder brands are often owned by the big tire companies and seem to pretty much use slightly older tread patterns and likely rubber compounds. I got a BMW with 'Rikken Raptors' which I was pretty suspicious of, but it turns out it's a a subsidiary of Michelin and makes tires in Indonesia. They've been pretty good tires though other special. Do check reviews though as satisfaction seems to vary a lot by brand and individual model.
I have found with cheaper tires though you do tend to compromise in at least one area. I loved my old Kumho Ecsta 712s back in the day, really fantastic grip and nice and quiet, but they only lasted about 2/3 as long as a more premium performance tire. They basically used a softer compound to get the same performance. They were probably a little less the 2/3 the price of a premium performance tire too so that's ok, but at the end of the day to some extent you do get what you pay for with tires.
