Your proposed solution sounds like more work than just replacing the two boards, and it wouldn't be nearly as strong as simply replacing the rotted wood. Just take a sledge and a prybar and take them off, go to home depot and have them cut the replacements to the same lengths as the original, take them home and nail or screw them in.
Wood is cheap. That appears to be a 2x6. With your proposed solution, the smallest piece of lumber you can buy would be an 8-foot length (2x2.5 feet)and you'll have 3 feet of waste lumber. To do a complete replacement, you'll need a 10-foot length and have zero waste.
