I've been studying at length the history of the Silverplate B-29 aircraft. Since we spend a good deal of time at Wendover Utah, the airfield there was where the 509th was based, the Silverplate version spent a great deal of time at that base for loading mockup of the gadget, and training, etc. The other sister base for the 509th was Havana Cuba, so those long training flights back and forth to Utah, brought abundance of Havana Club, and pallets of cigar boxes.
The first Silverplate prototype was built in Wichita used for training at Muroc, where we also race land speed events. I've had my vehicle number for Southern California Timing Association checked out for this year's competition events, it's the same as the Silverplate prototype airframe serial number. We'll dress up the starboard side of the car with the 509th tribute, the left side is for the Doolittle raid, we have another vehicle number 2268 to tribute the 16th and last aircraft off the deck of the USS Hornet, called Bat Out of Hell. That's what we plan to do, go like a Bat Out of Hell this year, and hope that the weather and the virus doesn't spoil the months of preparation!
