The inside of those cars doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the safety department, either. Feels very, very small to me. I think that the mfr is just adding on the basic thing, making it bigger and bigger, as most people just buy those humongous SUVs, and they want to get closer to that model.
When they were first released in the US, a friend of mine got a Mini for this wife, because she thought they were "cute." The transmission died at 50K miles a couple years later and Mini/BMW told her there was nothing they could do, as the car was out of warranty - would have to replace the whole thing - $$$$, etc. Weirdly enough, they just bought another new one to replace it!
