The water is constantly recirculated so only the water which vaporizes in the towers and escapes in the vapor plume needs to be replaced. The plant was on the shore of Lake Erie, which discharges into Lake Ontario before flowing over Niagra Falls.
The second and third photos show the 'First In The World' method my project team developed which allows repair of the cooling towers while operating. Previously this work could only be performed during Refueling Outages when the plant is completely shut-down for a ~30 day period every 18-24 months. The method we developed allows safe execution of repair work on a sixth of the tower at any one time, independent of plant operating schedule, and without impacting plant safety margins. We would do this every Spring and Fall to catch up on previously postponed maintenance and to eliminate damage caused by aging of the towers. Not in Summer as plant cooling capacity may have been impacted, not in Winter for worker safety.
