Do not use compression fittings, they are not designed for the kind of pressures developed in a brake system. As you surmised they are meant for fuel lines, vapor lines, etc., where pressure is low. (The packages compression fittings come in generally even say not to use them for brakes.)
I would run a new brake line using 3/16" NiCopp (nickel-copper alloy) tubing with appropriate fittings. (As you indicate 3/16" and 4.75 mm are so close in size they are essentially interchangeable. My flaring kit uses the same die for both.) Very easy to bend and flare. In most cases you don't even need a bending tool and it won't rust. If you don't want to run a complete new line you can cut and flare the existing line before the leak and install a union to connect to a new length replacing the damaged section.
