I was in a quite scary spin-out in a FWD Golf at fairly high speed on a highway. I was in a few cases when a fwd car would start to fish tail but would recover it with correct steering and ESP.
> the front turns
it is a common misconception. All wheels participate in a turn by providing sideways force. When the fronts start loosing traction the car just gradually understeers. When the backs loose traction even a little the car immediately becomes unstable a would spin out unless the motion is corrected with steering and/or ESP. Saabs are no different in this regard. Traction on snow is heavily dependent on remaining tread depth - so having significantly more worn tires in the back is just asking for trouble. On dry roads it is not important.
