I feel for you guys in the salt-belt. I'm in the foothills of CA, so I do keep a set of snow tires, but salted roads are a rarity, and they are usually followed by rain in my neck of the woods.
I bought a 9-5 that had once lived in Ohio for a few years of its life. I thought, "How bad could it be?" Never again.
After I sold that one, I had another 9-5 wagon (CA car its whole life) up on my lift one day and a neighbor from Ohio was walking by. He asked how old the car was, and I told him it was 15 years old. He said, "In Ohio that thing would have rusted into the ground, we would have re-mined the iron, and made another car out of it... and that car would already be rusty!" I invited him to come take a look... he could read the part number stamped into the original muffler!
We are spoiled by the climate. Only in recent years has the DOT started spraying the roads. I hate that they do it, but that's primarily because they do it at the weirdest times... like on a sunny day with forecast lows to be around 38. That usually happens near the end of the month and I honestly think they have a monthly allotment of spray and hours. Stupid.
I'm prepping my current 2003 Aero wagon for sale. Dog legs are smooth!!!
Here's an old photo of my 2003 on the lift:
