It had nothing to do with the ABS sensor / bearing/ tone ring ! Total coincidence. It was the Steering angle sensor. This model (2005 X3) often sets a light for steering angle sensor, and one can eliminate it by turning the wheel back and forth three times. This did not work for me, but a different mechanic was able to reset the code with his computer. I wonder if the act of putting it on the lift put unusual forces on the steering mechanism ??

Thanks for everybody helping even though this is not a Saab!
