The 9-5 wagon is fantastic for hauling stuff. That said, I think the v90 cross country is probably closer to the 9-5 than the v60. Exterior dimensions of the v90 are larger than the 9-5, but interior space is close. The catch with the newer Volvo wagons is the sloping rear window which makes them attractive looking does impact cargo space for tall items, especially compared to eg the xc70.
We are actively looking for a Volvo such that we will not need to rely on the Saabs for long road trips. Ours are higher mileage now, so a bit of a risk when we are far out in the boonies, though still great within towing distance. We are mainly looking at older Volvos, xc70 or late model p2 xc90, and I would say interior space is on par with the 9-5 in those, a bit more in the xc90.
The newer Volvos seem more complex, so I'd be interested to hear from anyone here with experience maintaining one (beyond the initial easy 100k of course).
