Thanks, I believe that answers my question, although I may have to actually try the crates with the differences in shape. This made me go to Edmunds for the actual specifications:
Saab 9-5:
Front headroom 38.7
Front legroom: 42.5
Front shoulder room: 56.9
Volvo V60 Cross Country:
Front headroom: 37.4
Front legroom: 42.3
Front shoulder room: 56.1
So they feel the same up front because they are about the same. But being over 6 feet tall, that headroom difference may be important to me.
Saab 9-5:
Cargo capacity rear seats up: 37 cu ft
Cargo capacity rear seats down: 73 cu ft
Volvo V60 Cross Country:
Cargo capacity rear seats up: 25.5 cu ft
Cargo capacity rear seats down: 60.5/cu ft
The 9-5 is clearly larger here with from 11.5 to 12.5 extra cubic feet of space in the two configurations. But as you say, some of that depends on the size and shape of what you load due to the differences in interior width. I have found that even some SUVS that appear large on the exterior, actually have less cargo capacity than the 9-5 wagon, and some have much less. Raising the floor doesn’t increase the capacity unless the roof is much higher.
