It's interesting that you didn't include IBM or Motorola.
Both build risc chips that the Apple essentially is
designed on. I also wonder why IBM wasn't mentioned as
a major player in the server/workstation market?.....
I would think that the risc design, being smaller, cooler,
& more efficient would be far more desirable for
embedded/controller applications than Intel's. And for all you
Intel/Microsoft chauvinists ranting about clock speeds,
you'd better consider the number of instructions a processor
can handle in any clock cycle. I think this goes a long way in
explaining why a Mac running at 450 MHz can do things faster
than a Pentium running at twice the clock speed. Finally,
there's no way I'd entrust an engine management system to
using Microsoft software. Linux or, any unix system for
that matter, might be more difficult to understand but
has shown in the past to be more resistant to crashes.
But, do embedded controllers need an operating system?
