Major OS not needed

Agree with Bob, embedded controllers do not justify a major OS such as Windows, Linux et al. Even Windows CE or similar can be overkill for the task involved. As in many process/manufacturing plants, the computer has a set routine to perform in real-time. It does not need options for user interface, fonts, graphics and so on. As complexity and interaction between controllers grows so must the size of the embedded computer and operating system - but examples used in a plant today look more than adequate fro automotive applications for many years to come.
