Sorry, my tone has changed a bit. Their data clearly indicated that some Saab cars insured by SF (namely 4dr 9-3s) generate more cost for SF when it comes to paying out for collision and comprehensive.
From their press release . . .
"Models generating the lowest payments for damage and theft are generally charged from 10 to 40 percent less than the standard collision and comprehensive premiums for vehicles in their price range. Models generating the highest payments for damage and theft are generally charged from 10 to 40 percent more than the standard premiums for those coverages for vehicles in their price range."
9-3conv. get a max discount for both medical AND
collision/comprehensive while the 9-34dr just gets the medical discount (it's important to know that medical typically only accounts for 3-5% of total premiums). In contrast, the Volvo S40, S70, and S80 get the max for both.
Is this "real world" data demonstrating that the 9-3 is less safe than the S40 (GASP!)? I say no! . . . and the proof is in the fact that the 9-3conv. garnered a perfect score and it's highly unlikely that the conv. is a safer car than the 4dr.
So what else could SF have factored in? Can't be much difference in the demographics of 9-3conv. drivers versus 4dr drivers. Fewer convertables on the road and therefore fewer cars to have to discount? . . . hmmmm, could be.
