It's just taken the American Insurance industry way too long to figure it out. The Swedish insurance industry has been reporting for years that SAAB's have lower medical claim payouts than any other make of car. They're even better than Volvo and Mercedes, which are not as safe as their ads make people think.
I would find it hard to justify a better rating for the 9-3 convertible than for a 2dr or 4dr, especially when some less responsible young guy, who couldn't afford it new, buys a used convertible that was traded in. Young guys and convertibles always have been a bad mix.
The reason SAAB doesn't fare well in the ratings sin't because of medical payouts, it's because they are very expensive to repair due to a safety design that has the body absorbing an impact before it reaches the passengers. Although I drive a SAAB partly because of that design, I still would rather have my nimble less "crashworthy" '67 96 than a heavier and less manuverable new SAAB.
