89 Saab 900S fuel cut off

When I take my foot off the accelerator at 1700+/- RPM, fuel injectors do not supply fuel to the engine, the car gives a mighty lurch, and when engine speed reaches idle speed, the fuel supply is resumed and engine idles fine. It's done this for years and all components check out. The lurch is mighty annoying (and quite severe!) Anyone had a similar experience and would like to share an explanation/cure??
