I would check the throttle switch and dashpot. I'm not exactly sure what came on your year engine, but I think they were still there in '89.
The throttle switch should close when the throttle is completely closed, and open if the throttle is just a hair open. If the switch is faulty or set wrong, it might be thinking you're at idle when not.
Most likely it's a bad dashpot. That's a saucer-shaped disk around 1 inch in diameter with a rod and spring. It catches the throttle arm when you take your foot off the throttle, and 'eases' it down the last 1/4 inch or so to closed. If the throttle is slamming shut, you're going to have a pretty abrupt engine response. Air will be flowing into the engine, and suddenly see a closed throttle plate, resulting in a reflect pressure wave through the AMM, indicating no air into the engine. No air, no fuel.
The dashpot should take 3-5 seconds for the throttle arm to move the last 1/4 inch or so. It may be bad or adjusted wrong.
Good luck!
