The advertizing firms name the cars. While some manufacturers claim that the number and letters mean something, Mercedes for example, the truth is that manufacturers carefully research the car names to see if the name will increase sales. A BleachFire V-8 sounds better than "economy car with slightly bigger engine and more decals." Saab took this route with the new 9-3 and 9-5 drawing on the past glory(?) of the 93 and 95 models. Which were alleged named after the project number.
