Volvo started using "GL" on some of their models sometime in the mid 70's and I remember it was supposed to be "Grand Luxe" or something like that. I'm not sure what the "GLE" was, unless maybe a "GL" with injection (Einspritz or whatever the German is). In this vein, I would figure the "GLS" is supposed to mean "GL Sport", i.e. a Luxurious Sports model. Many of these letter designations have come to be rather meaningless as we see more and more strange combinations of letters on the backs of cars. What is an "XRti" or a "GLXi" or... ??
