Well, maybe "grace" was going a little too far. But I do think the original 9000 design was more "balanced" front-to-rear than the '93 facelift. Also, it was a more practical and safer design in several ways: hatch opening was wider than the '93 face-lifted models, the extra glass in back on either side of the hatch eliminated the wide rear quarter blind spot present in the post '93 models that makes backing out of diagonal parking places very dangerous, and the taillights were bigger and had more bulbs/light output (better functionality). The small, single backup light on my '96 9000 is practically useless compared to the large twin backup lights on the pre-'93 models.
Those things said, I do appreciate the greater torsional stiffness of my '96 compared to my '91 9000 - nice not to have all that body creaking and moaning that was always going on with my '91. Also, the headlights with separate bulbs for low beams and high beams on my '96 are much better than the single-bulb headlights on my '91.
