Natural gas comes to Western Europe via Franco-German built Pipelines.

I exploit hydrocarbons, and can say that the Majors own that country. Gazpom is a shell that distributes cash to the ex-aparatchik elite. Their participation in joint oil and gas ventures is mainly on the distribution side, and the pay off side.

Russians are very good at the physical sciences. As to the space program, the Russians, as well as us Yankees, have the hard work of the V2 program to thank. Russians have better propulsion systems and we have better guidance systems. Why? We got Werner von Braun and the other guidance people, while the Russians got the propulsion staff of the V2 program.

The Russian acheivements are due to Soviet communisim. They spent more money and wasted more human life on developing their space program (and every other Soviet acheivement) than a democratic society ever could. The losses and sacrifices just would not be acceptable to a population with a vote.

In the end, Russia will not be developed in my lifetime or yours.
