Exhaust systems with dual tips... why?

I've always wondered about dual exhaust tipped mufflers. Are the diameters of the 2 tips combined generally equal to the diameter of the rest of the exhaust system? Why not just have an outlet that's the same size as the side that the goes into the muffler? Is it just for looks? If you have a 2.5" exhaust all the way to the muffler, you would want to have at least a 2.5" outlet on the muffler right? Is it just for sound to have the 2 exhaust tips? I dont really know much about muffler construction, maybe it's because of the way the internals are designed that it needs that type of output. Can someone enlighten me?
