I agree with your points for the most part. I still don't see diesels coming into play in the US market unless a serious fuel crisis is reached, though.
I think that GM needs to work on identity of its US-market models.
Take Pontiac, for example. Frankly, all of their cars are crap. And it's not just the styling. The Bonneville simply cannot compare in terms of quality and driveability when compared to the Dodge Intrepid. The Aztek is a great idea spoiled by outdated chasis, engines and mechanicals. The Grand Am is outdated, and the Montana minivan- Pontiac's best offering, IMO- just lacks the finesse of Honda and Chrysler.
Now take Cadillac. I think that GM is doing the best job with Cadillac. The next Generation Catera- based on the Epsilon platform I think (same as NG9-3) promises to provide the solidity and comfort of the current Catera with a bit more flare and performance. The Seville features some great technology and really doesn't trail the 5-series by much. The new Deville is great for such a big car. The Escalade, while based on tried and proven truck mechanicals, is not a bad vehicle. The interior is downmarket, but it drives well for something so big. (Land Cruiser is infinitely better, but it's smaller)
Now let's look at Saab... I think Saab is the GM brand with the most identity. But that's partially due to having only two models. Expland the Saab lineup with a sporty car, and make a more upmarket 9-5 to provide good competition to the 540i/E430, and you've got a great lineup. Granted, the current 9-3 is looking a bit dated, but the NG9-3 is looking good. Probably AWD and a more settled/solid chasis, and you've got a great BMW/Audi competitor. (Note I didn't include the S60 or Mercedes C-Class- I think the 9-3 offers a better value)
Anyways, enough rambling for me.
