We had a VW Rabbit ('79), and in '87 she suggested we look at Saabs, since we were interested in safety. We went over to Gibson Motor Co. in Perrysville, Indiana. He had a platinum blue '87 900T in the showroom, with the buffalo grey leather seats. We were sitting in it, thinking "wow", and then we had to ask Frank where the ignition switch was. We didn't think to look between the seats. :-)
Finances required us to get a used 900S, but it's been Saab all the way since, with the purchase of three more. My wife isn't by any means the Saab fanatic I am, and she has absolutely no patience for helping out in the garage. At one point, when we were in the market for another car, she went car shopping herself and ended up at the Subaru dealership. This was when the next generation 900 had come out, with a base price about the same as the Subaru Legacy. She thought the Subaru was underbuilt and overpriced and scoffs every time we drive by that dealership. It gives me secret pleasure. BTW, I use the name Saabaru because that's what some misled canoe outfitter in Canada called my '87 900S ("Does the canoe go on top of the white saabaru?"). Maybe he was kidding with a straight face, but the name stuck.
