If you are going city-hopping I would agree. Almost all European cities' central train stations are placed more centrally than you would ever be able to park your car (except Paris and London - but there you continue with le Métro or the tube).
When I go on city trips (from Luxembourg) I take my Saab to the hotel, park it there and use public transport (or my feet) during my stay. The main advantage of going by car is easy door-to-door transport of any amount of luggage - but I presume you'll be going to/from Europe by plane so that would exclude bringing your double bass anyway ...
The other advantage is that you don't risk being two minutes late for your car ...
But if you insist on renting a car you usually have to be 25 to rent the big models and 21 to rent the small models - but even a Fiat Punto, Renault Clio or Opel Corsa can easily do 100 mph (and they have a surprising amount of space - as long as you don't have to sit in the rear seat ...).
BTW "Arvig" - is that Scandinavian?
Regards,
Caspar
