We have know about this treat for a long time. Trust me. When the Soviet Union broke up many of there weapons were unaccounted for and this was the biggest concern we had. The biggest being that a terrorist group would buy a nuclear sub with nucs. Personally I dont think this nuclear threat could happen even if they had one which I doubt. The term having materials is so subjective. Iraq has materials for chemical warfare which consist of a milk factories. Milk processor factories are considered a threat because they could dry chemicals like they due milk for powder milk. Is this a real threat? It could be or it could not be but do we have the right to bomb every country that has milk processing factories? No.
What is really going on right now is the borders of all the contries are getting tighter thus preventing things form crossing. If we can prevent large objects like suitcase bomb(Its bigger then a suitcase)from crossing and obtain possible people who we consider threats we will be ahead of the game. The more people we catch the more information we have. I also know that we the US are very nice to our prisoners and they know it. These people however do know that the European countries are not so nice and they do not want to risk being caught overseas.
Is the government under attack? Yes with anthrax not nuclear weapons and with early treatment this is a non issue. The biggest problem that we are having right now is that this scare is coming at the same time as the flu is on the east coast. Everyone thinks they have anthrax. I was just telling Jim Miller yesterday that a young black male pt came in the ER a couple of weeks ago and said I've just come form New York City and I've got amtracks. The follow up question was then did you take the train? The answer was yes. I thought it was a joke and I made a quick exit before I started to laugh. Needless to say this patient did not have anthrax but the media has instilled so much fear into everyone that people are now becoming paranoid thinking that they have this disease. The art of terrorism is to instill terror into someone else much like a bully on the playground. Right now the terrorist do not need to do anything because the media is doing there dirty work by scaring everyone in the US. Everytime I turn on the computer or the TV anthrax news is there. Yes it is good to inform people but not for a month straight on the same subject.
In the future there is going to be more security. Things will cost more due to the increased security but interest rates will go down and there will be more tax relief to try to encourage customer spending and keep us out of a depression. In the end Bin Laden will be caught just as soon as we figure out what to do with the Afghanistan government. I honestly think we are stalling for a couple of months trying not to make the same mistakes that we did with Israel after WW2. The problem is that if we overthrow this government to quickly we will have Northern Alligance in power and this is not what we want. We currently want to help set up another government so that when we are done with this campain we can help rebuild. We also want other middle east contries to help with this and hopefully this will allow us a way to rebuild the trust of the middle eastern contries. Iran is already starting to voice some interest. Well enough of me rambling I just hate these so called "terrorism experts" doing the terrorist work by scaring more people.
