First, a caveat, I do not currently own a game console and won't be buying for a while - I just don't have the time to enjoy it. But I've been researching a future purchase and XBox does offer a few significant advantages:
1) A hard drive. As far as I can tell, it isn't used much yet (probably because game designers haven't had access to mass storage like this). As game development for XBox matures, the hard drive will allow complex games to load and run MUCH faster (DVD seek times are significantly slower than HD seek times) and allow designers to provide better long-term play options (like sports game franchise modes) and expansion options (like the ability to download additional tracks for racing games).
2) Likely to have better 3rd party add-on support. Microsoft has been playing the licensing and 3rd-party peripheral game longer and better than either Sony or Sega. Soon, you will probably see more choices (and therefore better prices) on differently configured game controllers, steering wheels, etc.
3) Software developer relationships. While Sony's machines have a reputation as being a PITA to develop for (though they are said to be less so, now that they've dropped the cartridge format), MS has built decades of developer relationships. It is true that there is more PS2 software currently available than XBox software, but once XBox establishes a user base I would expect that gap to close very quickly - especially as developers see the additionaly flexibility available to them due to the HD and graphics tuned specifically based on developer feedback.
