The question that has been bugging me about the whole console situation is whether the XBox will end up with unique titles or whether all the future releases for it will be PC ports... I mean, my understanding was that the whole *reason* for the XBox was so game developers could easily port PC titles to a console (hence Wintel/DirectX), thus hitting two consumer markets. If not, why in God's name would Microsoft build on an essentially open-architecture platform?
Personally, I would buy a PS2 now and wait to see what happens with the XBox and/or Gamecube. I was gonna put myself on the waiting list for the XBox, but thought again - it would be a complete waste of money for me to have two platforms on which to play the same games.... At least with the PS2 I know I'll have unique apps that you can't get anywhere else (GT3... :), 'cause Sony won't let them go anywhere else. :) And I haven't seen any apps forthcoming for the Gamecube which look to be terribly interesting.
As far as "technological superiority," it ain't worth crap. The Genesis was better than the SNES, the Jaguar better than anything else at the time, and the N64 better than the PS1. But you don't see them anymore... hell, you could easily argue Mac superiority to the PC technologically, but software is alway what dictates the success of hardware...
